Orthodontics and The Braces

Orthodontics and The Braces

Do you not like how your teeth look when you smile? Do you shy away from smiling because you don’t want people to make fun of your teeth? Then you must have been suggested braces at some point in your life. Braces (although used mostly for cosmetic purposes) are not just there to give you better-looking teeth but also to help you get rid of difficulties in everyday functions such as eating if your teeth are asymmetrical or just generally out of alignment.

There are several tools and treatments that you can get to straighten out your teeth. Most usually require a general treatment but the Cayo clinic in Kandy is well equipped to provide personalized unique treatments.

There are several types of braces. Each has a different purpose, which is mentioned as follows:

Metal braces: These braces are the most traditional form of braces made of a metal bracket placed in the front of your teeth. It has rubber bands attached to it that go around the teeth and help hold them in place. These bands also provide extra pressure to help straighten out your teeth.

Ceramic Braces: Since the metal brace is usually very visible, ceramic braces were invented to solve that. Ceramic braces replace the metal bracket with a tooth-colored, ceramic bracket, making them less noticeable. These can also be made with stainless steel, clear materials, and even gold!

Clear Aligners: Commonly known as invisible braces, these are clear brackets that fit onto your teeth, and they slowly move your teeth in the right direction over time. Tooth attachments may also be placed in with the aligners to keep them in place. Aligners need to be kept on for at least 22 hours a day for them to work.

Are Braces Painful?

A very frequently asked question is if getting braces would hurt. The truth is the process looks a lot more painful than it is. Getting braces does not hurt a lot, but the first time might hurt a little. Apart from that, getting adjustments might cause a little discomfort, but that can be treated easily with any over-the-counter painkillers.
